Tetsuo, the Iron Man (Shin’ya Tsukamoto, 1989)

August 5, 2015

A man is gradually turned into scrap metal. I guess that says it all. Moviemaker Tsukamoto seems to be somewhere between a genius and a madman. A mndtwisting, disgusting blend of Terminator, Alien and The Fly. The black and white footage initially fooled me into assuming that this one influenced these mainstream science fiction movies. But the release year disappoints, it is not a ground-breaking precursor, just a artsy-fartsy follower. It is a mandatory cyberpunk cannon, and luckily it is even in about an hour!
